Pianist Ian Scarfe takes audiences on a deeper dive into the classical music experience. His presentations blend discussion with performance, giving a historical context to the music and the composer, and offering demonstrations on how to listen to this intricately constructed music.

This will focus on the development of the so called "classical style", through the 1770s, 80s and 90s. The elegant and lyrical music of Mozart, designed to appeal to aristocratic patrons and conservative audiences, gives way to the younger, more virtuosic and dramatic flair of Beethoven, whose imagination lent itself to a generation hungry for political freedom and more intense experiences from their art.

Scarfe will in particular focus on several specific works, including Mozart's Sonata in B-flat K. 333 and Fantasia in D minor K. 397 and Beethoven's early and late piano sonatas.

Scarfe enjoys a busy career as a piano soloist, collaborative pianist and chamber musician. Based in California, he performs regularly around the entire San Francisco Bay Area, from Napa and Sonoma Valleys in the north, to Santa Cruz and the Monterey Bay in the south. An enthusiastic performer, some of his over 100 concerts each year bring him across the United States, Canada and Europe. Recent highlights include the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C., the Fairbanks Summer Arts Festival in Alaska and annual tours in Switzerland with the Zurich Mozart Trio.

Ian is the founder and director of the Trinity Alps Chamber Music Festival, which presents annual retreats and concert tours for dozens of musicians from around the world. Based in North State California's scenic Trinity County, the home of the Trinity Alps Wilderness, the festival has given over 130 concerts during its five-year existence, including educational performances at dozens of local schools and summer camps.

    This lecture is in English.
