Join us for an exclusive event with New York Times bestselling author, Michael Fertik. Fertik's newest novel, HIP SET, is a fast-paced thriller set on the shores of Tel Aviv. It was released in Kindle and hardcover in October 2019 and is set for official publication in the UK and US in early 2020. Fertik is a friend of the OFJCC, and he has agreed to give special early access to our community in advance of the 2020 book tour, which is set to include the Jewish Book Week in London and other global Jewish cultural institutions.

    About HIP SET:
Oscar Orleans is a Congolese refugee in Israel. He's also the only Hebrew-speaking liaison to the African refugee community living in Tel Aviv's worst slums. When his old friend Inspector Kobi Sambinsky of the Asylum Unit calls him early one Shabbat morning, he knows something is wrong. A young South Sudanese immigrant has been found murdered in the city's most iconic waterfront building and no one can quite place his origins. The only clue is his unusual name, Kinga, which he shared with another refugee from eight years earlier, and a controversial political figure in South Sudan's most dangerous warring faction. Kobi and Oscar must venture into the heart of Tel Aviv's Sudanese underground, Israel's hyper-violent Russian mafia, and a mystery that has been dormant for years near the shores of the Dead Sea.

OFJCC Palo Alto JCCHIP SET is a groundbreaking novel about Israel. Its story, imagery and characters demonstrate the complexity of what Israel represents to the country's many different inhabitants. The story offers its readers an unfamiliar perspective even as it travels some of Tel Aviv's most familiar streets. In this way, HIP SET is an important addition to the Jewish bookshelf. It gives voice to characters who make Israel come alive on the page.

Michael Fertik is a published fiction author, poet, produced film writer and playwright. His poetry, short fiction and novellas have recently appeared in Minor Lits; december; The Write Launch; Eclectica; Litro; Cease, Cows; Feminine Collective; and more. His writing has won fiction, poetry and film prizes and includes a New York Times Bestseller. He lives in Palo Alto, California.

This exclusive event will include a reading from HIP SET, as well as a conversation between Michael Fertik and Zack Bodner. Books will be available for sale.
