Join playwright and theater instructor Max Gutmann for a multi-media lecture and discussion about the greatest love story ever told. What makes Cyrano de Bergerac such a beloved play? Why would the author apologize to the show's first star for involving him in the production? In what ways is the play different from other popular love stories?

The talk includes filmed scenes from the American Conservatory Theater's 1972 production featuring Marsha Mason, and the Kevin Kline-Jennifer Garner Broadway version. There is also a brief snippet from the Jose Ferrer film.

Max Gutmann's plays have been performed throughout the US, garnering positive reviews in The Mercury News, the Orlando Sentinel and elsewhere. He has taught theater courses at several institutions and takes a particular interest in Shakespeare. One of his plays, What You Will: a Shakespearean Travesty, was written by cutting up Shakespeare's plays and reassembling the pieces. His book There Was a Young Girl from Verona contains limericks about each Shakespeare play.
