Beged Kefet* is a Hebrew language afterschool program for students in preschool through high school. It opened in September 2008 in response to the local community's need and has been located at the OFJCC since September 2009. Beged Kefet is a community school that operates with the local community and encourages parent participation and feedback. We offer multiple-level high school classes.
Beged Kefet's purpose is to teach the fundamentals and improve the knowledge of Hebrew throughout the four language skills—reading, writing, speaking and comprehension. In addition to teaching the language, we emphasize and incorporate learning about Jewish holidays and Israeli culture in our curriculum, as well as integrating family activities in the different grade levels. High school students who take these classes are eligible for credit towards the high school foreign language requirement.
Please contact us by email at [email protected] or [email protected] with any questions or concerns that you might have.
Welcome to Beged Kefet 2021–2022 School Year Registration
Classes will open in-person, based on the latest Covid-19 guidelines from the CDC and the school districts. Accordingly, in some classes there will be the option for either fully online or hybrid instruction.
At Beged Kefet Hebrew Language School, we offer afterschool Hebrew classes from kindergarten through high school at different satellite campuses: Palo Alto, Sunnyvale, Los Gatos, Foster City and Walnut Creek. This year we are also offering a weekly preschool Hebrew class. We have different classes at each location and each class is capped. If a class is filled to capacity, your child will automatically be placed on a waitlist. We will open more classes based on demand.
Beged Kefet's staff has put a lot of thought and effort into planning an online curriculum that focuses on keeping students engaged in learning. Our team has been training in specialized online teaching tools. During the 2020–2021 school year, our teachers taught online, in-person and in hybrid format. In our training, we have been working with specialists, participating in webinars and adopting a new digital teaching methodology. In addition, we are planning to integrate programs to build connections with Israel as well as holiday celebrations, within the Covid-19 guidelines.
Beged Kefet understands and believes in the importance of in-person learning. The 2020–2021 school year in Beged Kefet was completed in person on campus. We will do our absolute best to continue in-person learning, in accordance to county guidelines, for the 2021–2022 school year.
We are very excited to open the registration for the 2021–2022 school year and happy you have chosen to be part of our Beged Kefet community. You are invited to browse our website to find more information about the school, classes, our teaching staff and the schedule at each of our campuses.
Our goal is to complete 33 lessons each academic year. In case there are fewer than 33 lessons—due to federal or Jewish holidays—we will schedule 'make-up' lessons that will be part of our planned curriculum (for more information about schedule and holidays, visit the Campuses page).
Classes will begin the week of August 30, 2021. Classes taking place on Mondays will start on August 16, 2021 with two make-up lessons.
*The name "Beged Kefet" comes from the six Hebrew letters that are emphasized (or in Hebrew, get a dagesh) when they appear at the beginning of a Hebrew word or syllable.
