What is included in the core curriculum?

The Melton Core Curriculum, studied over two years, encompasses the following four courses:

Year l (30 weeks) - Register online
Rhythms of Jewish Living:  Focuses on the central ideas and texts which inform rituals and lifecycle observances.

Purposes of Jewish Living:  Teaches essential Jewish theological concepts and ideas as they unfold in the Bible, the Talmud and other sacred texts.

Year ll  (30 weeks) (will be offered Fall 2010)
Ethics of Jewish Living:  Explores ethical issues  such as justice, life and death, sexuality, and community, using case studies from Talmudic, rabbinic and contemporary literature.

Dramas of Jewish Living Throughout the Ages:  This course on “Jewish Memory” focuses on dramatic developments, experiences and issues from different periods in Jewish history, as reflected in historical texts.

Melton Scholars Courses
Using the Melton style of text-based study, “Scholars” courses focus on a deeper examination of selected Jewish texts, from the Biblical to the modern. In ten-week class sessions, “Scholars” courses invite Melton graduates & other experienced students to engage with Jewish texts that have shaped Jews and Judaism for millennia.
The scholars course to be offered in the 2009-2010 academic year is: Shemot I: From Slavery to Sinai

   
Students who complete both years of the program receive a Certificate of Judaic Studies from the Melton Program of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
