The
grassroots activists who formed the Bay Area Council for Soviet Jewry,
and their colleagues throughout the USA in the Union of Councils for
Soviet Jews, started out as amateurs.

day and night, quickly mastering the arts of organization-building,
fund raising, influencing political leaders, and publicizing their
campaigns through the media. For over two decades they challenged a
totalitarian superpower – one Refusenik and one prisoner at a time.
