Miss Representation
Film Screening & Panel Discussion

Ever wonder how to start that conversation with your kids about what they are seeing on TV, movies, and even commercials? The media portrays all kinds of messages—especially about how women and girls are portrayed. How can we empower our kids with the right tools and knowledge to understand these often negative messages?

In one week American teenagers spend 31 hours watching TV, 17 hours listening to music, 3 hours watching movies, 4 hours reading magazines, 10 hours online. That’s 10 hours and 45 minutes of media consumption a day.

You’re invited to a FREE screening of Miss Representation, followed by a thought-provoking panel discussion, lead by Stanford University’s Donnovan Yisrael, Parent’s Place Sheila Dubin, and local nonprofit About Face’s Jennifer Berger.

About the film:
Like drawing back a curtain to let bright light stream in, Miss Representation (90 min; TV-14 DL) uncovers how mainstream media contribute to the under-representation of women in positions of power and influence in America. The film challenges the media’s limited and often disparaging portrayals of women and girls, which make it difficult for women to achieve leadership positions and for the average woman to feel powerful herself.

Are you a teen interested in this topic? How does this film relate to you? Attend the screening, and stay for an (optional) specialized peer teen post-film discussion in the teen center. Not interested in the peer-to peer discussion? Stay for the larger group discussion in the theater w/ parents and adults. Teen discussion facilitated by: Amy Swart, MA, Brian Cooper MA M.F.T and Nina Keebler, MA.
