Nephesh Theatre from Israel Presents:
Gimpel the Fool
Based upon the short story by I.B.Singer
Adapted, Designed, Directed and Performed by Howard Rypp

Gimpel the Fool is a theatrical adaptation based upon the classic story by Nobel Prize laureate I.B.Singer and translated by Nobel Prize laureate Saul Bellow. This treasure from Yiddish literature portrays Gimpel's childlike acceptance and steadfast belief in God and human goodness and has inspired audiences throughout the world. Gimpel the Fool blends a rich soundtrack of voices and klezmer music into a surrealistic theatrical presentation.

The Nephesh Theatre was founded in Toronto, Canada in 1978 and was the only professional Jewish theatre operating in Canada at that time. In 1983, it moved its base to Israel where today it has a repertory of 15 plays in Hebrew and five in English. Nephesh Theatre tours throughout the world presenting plays with themes that Israel shares with the Diaspora.

Howard Rypp is Nephesh Theatre’s founder and Artistic Director, having directed over 60 plays. For this production, he has returned to his first love, acting, and portrays Gimpel.
