Job Strategies Series
 
Jewish Vocational Service (JVS) provides free classes on all aspects of job searches, interviewing and planning in a warm setting. The Jewish Employment Network (JEN) brings JVS employment expertise to the Jewish community. In partnership with the OFJCC, JEN offers workshops, panels, and networking events to help community members learn, connect, build skills, and find jobs.

Individual appointments with an Employment Specialist
Personalized job search assistance specially tailored to meet your particular employment needs. Work with an employment specialist includes identifying goals, work-related skills, and work environment preferences while building skills and strategies for an effective job search, including how to adjust resumes, write customized cover letters and network with employers.

Drop-in advising
Come by anytime during drop-in advising and Jeanine Cowan will be happy to spend a few minutes with you, answer job search related questions and provide feedback. Did you just find an announcement for the perfect job and want someone to glance at your resume? Have an interview coming up and want to practice answering a couple questions? Perhaps you’re interested in meeting with an employment specialist but haven’t scheduled an appointment (or your appointment isn’t for a couple of weeks). Drop-in advising is just right for you!

Developing Your Pitch
Tuesday, November 29, 7:00 – 9:00 PM
Prepare for that chance encounter to sell your skills and abilities to an employer or networking contact. In this workshop, you will prepare a strong, succinct pitch that represents your background, strengths and goals while targeting your job interests. Come ready to practice and share your expertise with the group.

The Career Gateway: Job Seekers Guide
 Tuesday, February 14, 10:00 AM–12:00 PM

Strategizing your job search takes a lot of effort and planning. In this workshop, you will get an overview of the career exploration process and the online Job Seeker's Guide, specifically designed for the Bay Area. In addition, you will be given time to begin using our online tools that help you assess your skills and preferences, explore careers, create plans and set goals, expand your skills, and create a successful job search. Job seekers and career changers, come to this workshop ready to explore! Please bring a Wi-Fi enabled laptop computer with you to the workshop.

 Get ready to think like the employer through resume and cover letter analysis, exposure to resume formats and contents, and strategies for crafting strong written correspondence with employers. In this workshop, you will gain thorough knowledge of how to target resumes and cover letters to specific employers and jobs.

Identifying Transferrable Skills

 Are you interested in transferring to a new sector? Are you having difficulty identifying and articulating your transferable skills? This workshop will help you learn concrete strategies for researching new fields, identifying and communicating transferable skills and re-packaging yourself to head in a new direction. Participants must bring a resume and job description they are interested in to this workshop.

Are you interested in tapping the vast network of unadvertised positions? In this workshop, participants will learn how to leverage their existing network of contacts and gain valuable skills to help expand that network. This workshop will focus on networking techniques that help you get closer to the community that interests you and the jobs within it.

How to Find a Job Using Twitter
 Thursday, May 24, 7:00–9:00 PM

Twitter is a networking and micro-blogging service that allows you to send and read short messages, 140 characters in length, called “tweets.” Twitter helps you to create a growing community, find local job openings, gain and share knowledge with others in your industry and market yourself to your professional network!

Come learn how to use Twitter to help you land your next job! This workshop will cover Twitter basics, strategies for using Twitter, Twitter feed, Twitter tools, and will help you create a plan to make Twitter beneficial for you!

This workshop for recent college grads in their 20s will teach you essential job hunting tools including planning and organizing your job search, how to set goals for your job search, essential job search strategies, resume writing strategies and how to leverage and expand your network to find your next job.

Labs target specific skills and we help you attain them. Topics for these labs will be announced on the JVS website www.jvs.org each month before the lab takes place, based on the needs of current clients. Labs are for JVS clients working with Employment Specialists. Please let your Employment Specialist know if you would like to attend. If you are not yet working with someone, contact us and we'll get you started.
